Athlete of the Week: Katie Kregg!

January 23rd, 2017. I weighed in at 230 pounds and was walking into my first day of New You at Friction, thinking:

what I have gotten myself into.

  • I didn’t know how to do anything athletic.
  • My eating and drinking habits were out of control.
  • I got winded walking up the stairs at my apartment.
  • I had been depressed for months – sometimes to the point of missing work because the reality of my day was too much to handle.
  • All around, I felt and looked awful.

New You

I was scrolling though Facebook when I saw the ad for New You and at first I thought it was a scam (sorry! – it just sounded too good to be true).

But, I set up an appointment anyway because I was desperate to change, to feel better, to become better.

When I went in for my appointment there was a class going on and my first though was “OH MY GOD, Katie, you cannot do this”.

I was walked through the process of New You and explained how the program was designed for people who had never had any experience with CrossFit. When the program and paleo diet were all explained to me, I knew that I needed to give this a chance. I figured that worse case it was six weeks and if I failed I could just pretend like it never happened.

Kool-Aid

Well, by the end of those six week, I had drunk the Kool-Aid and there was no looking back.

  • I had lost a total of 12 pounds and had doubled the number of rounds I did on our very first benchmark workout.
  • I was moving better,
  • feeling better,
  • my head was clearer,
  • my eating and drinking habits had improved dramatically,
  • and I was able to get up out of bed and handle the day in front of me.

The ink was barely dry on my one year, twelve class a month membership before I told Coach Paul that I needed to up to the unlimited class membership.

Needs and Wants

I needed and wanted more CrossFit.

I wanted to lift more weight.

I wanted to be able to run without stopping.

I wanted to do a pull up.

I knew I wanted to feel that high every day.

6 Months of CrossFit

It has been just over six months since my journey at Friction began.

  • I am down to 198 pounds.
  • I have RXed three workouts.
  • I PRed my front squat from the rack.
  • I’ve learned how to row, do push-ups, all kinds of barbell work, and the ever dreaded burpee.
  • I am getting more comfortable with being upside down, hanging from the bars and kipping, and meal prep Sunday has become a routine.

Most important of all, I have learned to how to be comfortable in my own skin again.

FricFam and the sport of CrossFit have shown me that it isn’t how much weight you can clean, if you can run without stopping, or if you are struggling.

It is about showing up, leaving everything at the door, and giving your best to your workout.

There is no better feeling than being sweaty after a workout and thinking “Damn straight, I just did that. I am a badass!”
